Junior Red Cross/ Red Cross

Junior and Youth Red Cross is a lifeline of the Red Cross. The Junior Red Cross and Youth Red Cross is the Student’s Wing of the Red Cross. It is a group movement organized within schools and Colleges.

Origin of the Junior Red Cross:

The Junior Red Cross wing emerged out of mainly three incidents :–

  • During the heavy floods in the state of Ohio in America, six children pooled up some money and sent it to Mrs. Clara Burton, founder of the American Red Cross. This money was given to a poor widow, a victim of the floods with more contribution. This old lady build a home and named it “Little Six Red Cross Landings”, as a mark of gratitude to these children.
  • During the Boer War (1899-1902) the youth in Canada formed a group, collected money and sent to the Red Cross as their contribution.
  • In the province of Quebee in Canada in the year 1914 children participated by making bandages and dressings for the wounded soldiers of war. By 1915 the Junior Red Cross Movement spread towards Europe with a bigger swing.

America made the largest contribution by organizing school children for the Red Cross activities. Father of our Nation Mahatma Gandhi, also served as a Red Cross Volunteer during his stay in South Africa.

Junior Red Cross in India:
Junior Red Cross wing was first organized in 1926 in Punjab. Today there are more than 6 million Junior Red Cross members in India.
