Blood donation - INDIAN RED CROSS SOCIETY, Gujarat state branch

Voluntary Blood Donation movement picked up in Gujarat immediately after the war with China in the year 1962 under the auspices of Indian Red Cross Society. The first voluntary blood Bank in the state was started by Red Cross in the Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad in the year 1963, followed by one Blood Bank in Gulabbai General Hospital in 1964 and in Seth V.S. General Hospital in the year 1965. Due to the untiring and relentless efforts put by Red Cross workers and with the whole-hearted support and cooperation from the general public, other service organizations and the social bodies voluntary blood donation programme achieved tremendous success over the past many years. From the initial blood collection of about 400 blood units in the year 1963, Red Cross organization has been able to reach more than 80,000 units of blood yearly. At present there are 6 blood banks in Ahmedabad including the blood Grid run by the Ahmedabad District Branch in collaboration with Government / AMC run hospitals with annual blood collection totalling above 50,000 units. Red Cross Blood Banks are also being run at Navsari, Bharuch, Nadiad, Anand, Kapadwanj, Himmatnagar, Amreli, Godhra, Petlad and Kalol. Together these blood banks collect between 25 to 30 thousands blood units yearly.

A number of other Service Institutions and Private Trusts have followed suit and actively participating in voluntary Blood Donation Programme. Many Red Cross Branches not only conduct motivational work on voluntary donation but also help the needy patients in getting safe blood through voluntary blood donation. Any individual with normal health and between the age of 18 years and 55 years can donate blood.

Gujarat Red Cross has been the proud winner of National Blood Donation Trophy at the hands of President of India for 9 times for securing the highest number of voluntary blood donation amongst all Red Cross Branches in the country. It is indeed a tremendous achievement for Gujarat Red Cross since none of the other Red Cross State Branches in the country could win the Shield for so many years.

First of October, every year is being celebrated as "All India Voluntary Blood Donation Day" throughout the country. On this occassion, Red Cross Branches organize special Blood Donation Camps, Seminars, Workshops, Meetings etc are also arranged with a view to educate the general public about the importance of Voluntary Blood Donation and also to remove the fear complex on blood donation which is still prevailing in the minds of the people.

It will be interesting to note that we have on our rolls more than 4000 blood donors who donate their blood every 3 months. Some of our Veteran Blood Donors have become "Centurian Blood Donors" who completed hundred times donation besides considerable number of couple donors.

Red Cross Organization aims to achieve a situation where safe blood would be available to each and every needy patients in the country and complete removal of professional blood donors. Our main hurdle is about funds as we have to set aside considerable amounts of funds towards fulfilling the statuatory provisions of Foods and Drugs Control Rules. However, we cannot backtrack from our aim for want of funds as the cause is most important.

In Ahmedabad alone, there are 35 Centurion Blood Donors and within 2 months another 2 donors will become Centurion Blood Donors.

Red Cross Organization takes special care to help Thalassemia patients who need frequent blood transfusion for survival. More than 450 Thalassemia children are given regular blood transfusion by Red Cross round the years.
